Mag students to review west end shows
Magazine students at noSWeat can let the sun shine in and join the dawning of the age of Aquarius when they catch the latest West End show or play as part of their course, thanks to a special deal between the college and a West End theatre agency.
From hit musicals like Hair which heralded the growth of the hippie movement (first time round) and Phantom to serious productions like The Woman in Black and Enron; noSWeaters on the magazine course will get a seat at a matinee or evening performance, compliments of noSWeat.
The visit is included in the magazine programme which starts this autumn.
A spokesman for the theatre agency said: "We are happy to work with noSWeat to offer this service. Tickets for these shows are expensive and hard to get through ordinary means."
noSWeat founder, Stephen Ward, said: "We give our students every advantage of our location in the centre of London. Writing up a review on a top show or play with world famous actors, directors and writers will boost our students' cuttings files giving them a review to die for and, therefore, a head start when it comes to seeking work in an increasingly competitive market.
"I am grateful to our business arm which has negotiated this special deal, all credit to them."
Students will be encouraged to pen a review of the show demonstrating their ability to write a critical appraisal,
which is also well-informed and interesting to read.
And in order to do that they will have the best advantage of all - actually seeing the show itself, live in front of their eyes and will be able not only to give their own opinion of the performance but also gauge audience reaction and comment.
The magazine course, part of the NCTJ accredited Diploma in Multi-Media Journalism, launched this year also includes sub-editing elements, video journalism, on-line journalism, news reporting media law and central government.
Students will make their own videos to post on YouTube and learn the highly-prized skills of computer editing, interviewing on camera and writing voice-overs. Former students have been highly successful when it comes to finding work, even in today's highly competitive market.
