Work experience? noSWeat!
Bosses at noSWeat are focussing on work experience as part of newspaper and magazine courses in a bid to give their students a head start in the world of work.
Many noSWeaters have already successfully turned their work experience into a job offer, or found positions through contacts made on news desks the length and breadth of the country.
They work on the national and provincial press as well as well-known news stand and business to business mags and often contact their alma mater with hot vacancies, often in London but also in major cities and publishing hubs all over the UK.
Now the central London centre is looking to set aside time early on in its newspaper and magazine courses in order to make sure a work experience slot is in place at the very start of a student´s relationship with noSWeat, leaving them free to concentrate on their academic and practical studies.
Said course director and founder of the school, Stephen Ward: "We are continually being inundated with requests from the industry for interns.
"We pride ourselves on providing the best people for the best places.
"Often we find a noSWeater will beat contenders from other courses for a coveted work-experience slot simply because of our contacts in the industry which are second to none and our reputation as one of the top training centres in the UK.
"Work experience on a live newspaper is vital and noSWeaters are not limited to one establishment or area, they can and do find their first toe-hold in the industry both in the capital and nationwide."
One student, working on a national newspaper in Canary Wharf, said: "I started here as a work experience person. While I was still on the noSWeat course I was offered paid shifts and am now a staff reporter."
Another, now sub-editing for a celebrity-based photo mag, said: "Many places leave you to sort out work experience for yourself, or offer it in their own offices. At noSWeat the world is your oyster. I started on a TV listings and celebrity gossip mag.
"Now I´m on an internationally renowned publication which prides itself of scooping some of the best in the world. I´m loving it, and it´s basically down the top class training I received noSWeat."
Head of journalism at the college, Andrew Kelly, added: "We get some glowing recommendations from former students whose dream has come true while studying with us or shortly afterwards. These people are so proud of their time with us that they actively help current students find work experience and jobs.
"We encourage this relationship between past students and those presently with us. We say: Once a noSWeater – always a noSWeater."
